A message from Jean Brown: “Thanks everyone for all your support of Henderson United Church, and Hall. Hope that folks can attend our Mon. Aug. 5th pancake breakfast at the Henderson Hall. Your support enables our little white church to continue serving God, honouring our ancestors who built the church/hall years ago, and to pay the heating, hydro, insurance, expenses at both the church and the hall. It is a sacred privilege for our church to collaborate with the Township on our community hall, and the church pays the heat, hydro, insurance, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies for both the church and the hall while providing cleaning/booking of the hall. The Township offers repairs, maintenance on all appliances and equipment, grass cutting, painting of walls, and snow removal. Please spread the word, uphold our ventures in your prayers, and plan to attend. As well there is an Arden Artisans Open studio event on Aug. 10th and 11th. On Sat. Aug. 17th the Kennebec and District Historical Society and the Arden & Community Wesleyan Church host a Fundraising BBQ and concert on Sat. Lots going on in August with the Lions Club of Land O’Lakes. August 10th the Farmers Market where we have several vendors, our amazing Canteen offering baked goods, specialized coffees, eggers, hotdogs and hamburgers and we are selling fresh sweet corn donated by John Gunning. This runs from 10-1 August 10th you can register at 8 am for an 18- hole golf tournament at Hunters Creek. Shotgun start at 9. $60 with prizes and meal included Contact Chuck Davis at 613-336-1822. Put on your dancing shoes as Music and Friends will entertain us again on Sunday August 11th 2-5. August 12th is International Youth Day. Let’s celebrate this day by bringing non-perishable breakfast items for the free breakfast program at Finnegan’s General Store for the high school students. This program begins in September.
August 14th The Land O’ Lakes Garden Club’s speaker is – Andre Hirsz, one of our members. Andre will talk to us about permaculture, the concept of utilizing land, resources, people, and the environment in a manner that doesn’t produce any waste. All are welcome. The Addington Highlands Flinton Library celebrated its 75th Anniversary on Saturday August 3. It was a wonderful celebration and congratulations and thanks to everyone who has made this library possible from its inception until today.
The 2nd Annual CORN BASH hosted by the Denbigh Recreation Committee is on Saturday, August 10th from 1 to 5pm at Heritage Park in Denbigh. Corn, salads, drinks and ice cream are all free and please bring your favorite salad to share. There will be a dunk tank at 3 balls for $5.00, Family Fun Games for all ages, and a Flea market with something for everyone. Last week in my big Harlowe report I inadvertently omitted a great visit with Jim and Lorraine Dix, whom we’ve known since Lorraine was once a waitress at the Snow Road Cafe where twenty five years ago before we were married spouse and I dated at that cafe and had a blast! We could “date” secretly and privately in beautiful downtown Snow Road. Jim is of course in the Harlowe house band and Lorraine is a cheerleader for the whole organization.
Looking to the future the Arden Artisan event excitedly happens this coming Sat. Aug. 10 and Sun. Aug. 11 from 11 – 4 featuring Gord Wright at Blue Heron Ridge; Joanne Picket and Arlene Uens at Arden Pottery, Sarah Hale, Sylvia and Dave Parno at Arden Batik, and Judith Versavel. John DuChene, James Hanley and Aileen Merriam at Gallery on the Bay. Each studio offers a door prize opportunity, along with visiting, viewing, purchasing, commissioning.
Land O’Lakes Emmanuel United Church in Northbrook met last week in air conditioned comfort as a satellite church with live streaming from Selby United Church, along with local input. This Sun. Aug. 11 Henderson United will welcome back the Rev. Kaitlyn Ostrander from summer holidays.
Congratulations to our own Rebecca Kelsy on her marriage to Lane Miller in Estevan Saskatchewan. Attendants in blue, fantastic music, outdoor setting, wedding photos with Rosie- a former Henderson puppy are a few of the hi-lights. Their romantic first dance song was "Better Together" by Luke Combs followed by cutting the vanilla cake that included a variety of cupcake flavours for guests to enjoy. We love Rebecca and Lane to pieces- congratulations.
John and Heather Newton of Bowmanville dropped in for a visit and we had a great chin wag recalling the good old days in beautiful downtown Henderson village.

Snow Road Community Centre is having a Social Dinner “Bring Back Childhood Memories” on August 10th. Bring along your toys, memorabilia and games from the 50’s and 60’s. Take along one of your childhood photos for guessing the cute kid’s name. As always, join your friends for an evening of good food and great company. Bring your favourite dish. We now have a Community Fridge in the foyer of the Ompah Community Centre. In the fridge will be food from the store in original packaging, or extra produce from your garden (must be washed, dried and bagged). Please join us on Wednesday mornings for coffee and treats starting at 10am. It’s a great way to meet your Ompah neighbours and friends. The North Frontenac Amateur Astronomy Club will be honoring the memory of one of their members by naming their latest Observatory the “Guy Frederick Nason Memorial Observatory” in light of his many years of faithful dedication to astronomy, and public outreach to the residents of North Frontenac and beyond.

The temperatures have been sauna like… Hoping all those who work outside have been able to find some relief when they can. Our local food options have been rockstars during this heat wave. Friendly reminder: when you say it’s too hot to cook so let’s get take out, remember that they’ve been cooking all day so you don’t have to.
The Sydenham Legion is hosting their bass derby on Saturday, August 17th. Tickets are only $10 each. Tickets are available at the one stop as well as downstairs at the Legion (open Tuesday - Friday from 2-6pm (later on Friday’s). Grand prize will be a smoker/grill. BBQ lunch will be available for purchase starting at noon.

Darryl Silver’s Family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the community for the outpouring of support and memories shared at his celebration of life. A corn roast was certainly a suitable way to remember him. You are missed, Darryl.

Style Revival Clothing Center will be open Saturdays August 10 and 17, from 10am to 1pm. Style Revival provides gently used clothing, free of charge. They are also open every Wednesday. Location at the Verona Free Methodist Church. They are currently accepting clothing donations.
A free Kid's Camp will be held from Monday, August 12 to Thursday, August 15, 9am to noon at the Verona FM Church. Ages Grade 1 to 6. There will be crafts, games, bible stories, an adventure story and treats. Parents can call the church for further info at 613-374-1232.
Verona Lions are having a Fruit Pie Sale for $15 per pie. Place your order at 613-539-6662 . Pickup at the Garlic Festival on Saturday, August 31.
