Arden
by Brent Fehr
The area was named Kennebec Township in 1823, and during the mid-nineteenth century, setters came up the Salmon River in search of land. Every male settler over eighteen years old was promised a hundred acres, first on the river, then on Horseshoe Lake, Buck Lake, and Bull Lake. Later, lots were created on the shores of Deep Water Lake (now Big Clear Lake) and Cross Lake (now Kennebec.) The first arrivals were by water or on foot, but gradually people got together and build rough trails for carts.

Battersea’s Wild Art Walk Looking for Creators: Last October, a great deal of fun was had by creative types in the woods around Battersea. The Wild Art Walk took place along the Milburn Trail across from the ballpark. The 3km trail is on land stewarded by the Nature Conservancy of Canada and has become a beloved amble which meanders through field and forest and along streams and ponds. The brainchild of local resident, Sarah Wiseman, the Wild Art Walk, which is an official event of the Battersea Pumpkin Festival, is inviting South Frontenac residents and indigenous artists in the area to create displays in the woods. Last year, the exhibits were wide ranging. There was a giant wooden mobile, a grapevine tornado and a bevy of beavers sharing a cuppa. Anything goes! Creators can choose to display their art for the month of October, or on the day of the Pumpkin Festival which is October 5th.Everyone is welcome to participate. You do not need to be a “professional”. It’s about having an opportunity to have fun creating and playing in the woods! The deadline to notify organisers about participation is September 1st. So here is what you missed! Well that is a wrap on the 2024 Parham Fair!!! Thank you to all the volunteers who put in a lot of hours to plan, organize and get things prepared for the weekend. From all accounts these were huge hits!! Then the Horse Pull - always a family favourite! Although the weather forecasted for Saturday caused a few of the activities to be cancelled, the weather cooperated and we were able to get on with the events of the day! Once again, thank you to everyone who played a part in putting this all together as well as those that worked in the church booth, the rec committee booth, the vendors who were on site and all others that had a big or small part in making the fair a success.
