Did you know... street lights were installed in Battersea in 1951! And, as quoted from The Tweedsmuir History, "residents now meeting at night will not have to guess by the walk, or the dress, or the stature, who their neighbour may be".

Where the past and present create the future! The 2024 Frontenac County Plowing Match on Sunday, September 8th will be held at the farm of Ron and Ruth Taite, 4297 Perth Road, Inverary! Opening ceremony is at 10am and final judging scores are shortly after 3pm. There will be two on-site food vendors: More Smoke and Otter Creek. September 11th – The Land O’ Lakes Garden Club speaker this month will be Duncan Armstrong, a cottager on Lake Skootamata. Duncan will talk to us about Native tall grass prairie grasses and wildflowers:  their application and benefit for local landowners, gardeners, and communities. All are welcome. Econorent Equipment Rentals Inc. is hosting an Anything for Alzheimer Coffee Break. Please come and join us at 14 Bosley Road on Sept 12 from 10am to 12pm. Drop in, or stay for the duration, have a coffee made from our very own blend and a sweet treat made with love by our Golden Girls. The “Forget Me Not” ground or beans coffee is made especially for the KFLA Alzheimer Society. You will be entertained with an exciting equipment demonstration by a team member of Econorent. The Flinton Rec Club will be hosting a Pub Style Trivia night on September 21st at the Flinton Hall. Doors will open at 7pm and trivia will begin at 8pm. Cost is $10 per person. The bar will be open and there will be snacks available to purchase or people can bring their own snacks.

Denbigh

Denbigh Diners was well attended and was a great meal.  Thank you to Land O’ Lakes Community Services and all the volunteers.  We look forward to seeing everyone next month on Monday October 7.

Two new park benches and a chain link fence were recently installed at the playground in Heritage Park. Thank you to the community volunteers who gave their time and talents to install them.

The Denbigh Recreation Committee will be hosting Euchre starting Friday September 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Denbigh Hall.  It will run every other Friday evening and September 20 will be the next time.

Remember Wellness will be every Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Denbigh Hall starting September 10, 2024.

Denbigh Community Food Bank will be open Tuesday September 10 and 24 from 10am – 11am.  Call 613-333-2224 if you are in need so a box can be prepared for you.

The Postal Boxes in Centennial Park in Harrowsmith were vandalized the week of August 26 - 30.  Several were pulled off their moorings and twisted around, and the newspaper boxes were knocked over.  A report has been filed with the Ontario Provincial Police.  If you saw anyone in Centennial Park abusing the poor boxes, please contact the OPP at 888-310-1122.

Our own newly weds Lane and Rebecca (Kelsey) Miller of Estevan Saskatchewan are home to celebrate father of the bride Keilan’s 60th birthday- where does the time go? I remember when Rebecca was born!!

Thanks to everyone who supported our Henderson United Church spaghetti supper and my word- it was over the top in taste and in attendance- Yahoo!!

This Sat. Sept. 7 the fundraising BBQ and Concert (by donation) happens inside at the Kennebec Community Centre in Arden from noon- 4:30 and it will rock with live music starting   at 12:30. Musicians include Vernon Scott and Friends, Clearview- the Matson family singers, Risen, New Journey. This super-duper spiritual event is hosted jointly by the Kennebec and District Historical Society and the Arden and Community Wesleyan Church and is happening inside- rain or shine!

This Sun. Sept 8 Land O’Lakes Emmanuel United in Northbrook meets in person at 10am as a satellite church of Selby United on live stream. On Sept. 22 they will have an in person worship at 10am celebrating the seasons of creation and God’s abundant love.

Battersea’s Wild Art Walk Looking for Creators  The Wild Art Walk is an official event of the Battersea Pumpkin Festival and is inviting residents and indigenous artists in the area to create displays in the woods.  Anything goes!  Creators can choose to display their art for the month or just the day of the Pumpkin Festival

It’s Back! Ompah

Local musicians and singers performed, and the enthusiastic audience joined in to sing during the sing along songs. The performers included Ompah Dom, the Ompah Choir, David Young, and Allan Green. During the event, we also enjoyed delicious sandwiches, baked treats, and tea and coffee, generously provided by community volunteers. (Sue, Marily, Laurie). Donations were collected for the Ompah Community Centre. Thank you to Dominic for organizing this event, and to everyone else who helped at the event.

The Rural Frontenac Community Services Community Café has resumed monthly health and wellness programs for seniors, which are held on the first Wednesday of the month at the Ompah Community Centre. Yesterday’s topic was “Learn about Bereavement Support”, with Katie Worden. On September 18th, from 12pm to 3pm, at the Ompah Community Centre, Elaine Moffitt and Hanne Quigley are offering a cooking class called “Where’s the Meat? –Easy Plant Based Cooking. Enjoy an afternoon cooking and breaking break with Elaine and Hanne. Plant based cooking has never been this delicious or easy. Participants will enjoy tasting the various recipes as they drink tea and coffee, and will take home some amazing lunch and dinner ideas for preparing their own meat and dairy free meals. Community Fridge in the foyer of the Ompah Community Centre.  In the fridge will be food from the store in original packaging, or extra produce from your garden (must be washed, dried and bagged).  Everyone is welcome to take what you can use, or to donate what you can, so everyone can benefit. Thank you to Katie for her work in bringing this idea to life. There are lots of fresh fruits and vegetables in the fridge, so please take them home to enjoy.

Please join us on Wednesday mornings for coffee and treats starting at 10am. It’s a great way to meet your Ompah neighbours and friends. While you are there drop by the library which is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to noon. The next Ompah Birthday Bash/Potluck is on Wednesday, September 18th at 6pm.

Celebration of life was held on Sunday for the late Marty Cowdy.  Marty's wish was for no tears but to enjoy life.  He will be missed by many.

Our family has lost another great lady ....our Sister in Law (aunt) Linda Lowery has passed away.  Keep the family in your thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.

Our sympathy also to the tragic accident that claimed the life of 19 year old Quintin Alton, grandson of Eddie & Louise Alton.  Eddie is the broher of Vivian Lowery of Parham.  Taken way to soon, please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers.

Reminder Stephen Goodberry and his wife Debra Lyn Currier will be doing a Gospel Inspirational Show at Parham United Church on Sunday September 8 from 2 to 3:30 pm light luncheon following.

Also mark Sept 21 at the Parham United Church there will be a Roast Beef Dinner from 5 to 7.

Perth Road

Outreach update abroad: World Vision ... Life can be hard in the community of Lomas, Bolivia. Challenges like limited access to water and child protection have to be dealt with. But with World Vision and the help from the members of Perth Road United Church, our sponsored child and his family are doing better than ever. Recently, over than 135 people have a toilet. More have learned about good hygiene. Some 21 community members were trained on how child sponsorship works.

Outreach 2 update abroad: The Converted Milk Churn was started by Glen Smith around 2018 and sends an average of $500 annually to Transfomed Faces (T.F.), known familiarly as Smiling Faces to the Perth Road United congregation. The T.F. mission is to transform the lives of children and adults with cleft lip and palate, and empower medical teams in developing countries. Thanks to the membership and visitors who drop spare change into the milk churn. Paper money also is very helpful.

Outreach at home: Just a continuing reminder that donations for the Foodbank at Southern Frontenac Community Services Corp. (The Grace Centre) are always welcome year-round at Perth Road United Church before Sunday service at 10:00am.

Thanks to the volunteers who repaired and painted the church window frames, and also to those who painted the handrails leading up to the church and Sunday School Hall.

Congratulations to Rural Frontenac Community Services on receiving a $10,000 donation from the Bay of Quinte Mutual Insurance Company! Bay of Quinte distributed $10,000 to 15 organizations in their catchment area to celebrate their 150th Anniversary! What a wonderful way to celebrate!!

Plevna's Halloween Haunted Walk is coming up and to make this event a great success you can help out by donating treats for the kids, decorations, haunted rink materials or funds to go towards these items. Whether you're interested in volunteering your time, donating supplies, or contributing financially, every little bit counts. Together, we can transform the haunted walk into a mesmerizing haunted landscape where families can come together to enjoy the spirit of Halloween.  Let’s unite our efforts and creativity to make this year's Haunted Walk a night to remember for all ages. Join in and ensure that Plevna’s Halloween celebration is a frightfully fantastic experience that the community can cherish for years to come! Verona

Style Revival Clothing Center will be open Saturday September 7 and Saturday September 21, from 10 am to 1 pm. Style Revival provides gently used clothing, free of charge. They are also open every Wednesday from 10 am to 1 pm. Location at the Verona Free Methodist Church. They are currently accepting clothing donations.

The Verona Car Show will be held on Saturday September 14 from 8am to 3pm at the Verona Lions Center. Musical entertainment will be provided by Fast Forward. Lots to see - Classic cars, live music and kids zone. Admission by donation.

William Spain and his family are planning an "At Home" on September 21 in remembrance of William's wife, Lucy who passed away last February. The family would like to let friends and neighbors know that they are welcome to drop in and celebrate her life.
