The village was first called Clear Valley, but postmaster David Osborne, who had read and enjoyed the poem "Enoch Arden," chose the name that has lasted to the present day.

A beaver dam let loose on Richardson Road but it’s all fixed up now. Speaking of animals- “unofficial cougar sightings” have been reported somewhat nearby but have not been confirmed - so take care, folks. Also, with duck season approaching I know we can count on our hunters to respect the fence lines and privacy of everyone as always.

September 19, 2024 The Perth & District Historical Society has made its home for several years at the Perth-Upon-Tay Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. And so, to start the 2024 – 2025 season, for our September 19, 2024 meeting, we are taking a look at our local Legion’s Veterans Banner Programme. Speaker: Stacey Niceliu will speak on the topic called The Veterans Banners of Perth. His presentation will cover the background for introducing the project in Perth, the sponsors and the extent of the community’s participation. As for previous years, the raising of the Veterans banners in Perth signals the start of Legion Week. This period helps to spread the message of the services that Legions across Canada provide their respective communities whether for Veterans and their families or for the community at large. Stacey Niceliu, a member of the Perth-Upon-Tay Branch, is our speaker for this month and is one of the members working with the Veterans Banner Programme. The banners displayed throughout Perth help demonstrate the history of military service over the years by those connected with Perth. This meeting is open to the public, at 7:30pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, Perth-Upon-Tay, Branch 244, home of the Hall of Remembrance, 26 Beckwith St. E. in Perth. The usual “Toonie Fee” applies for each meeting. For information, contact Ellen Dean at 613-264-8362. Sharbot Lake
by Greg Rodgers

Do you want to experience a greater sense of community in Sharbot Lake? Are you feeling like you need to connect more with people around you? Here are some of the best ways to meet up with neighbours and friends in and around our village on a regular basis.

The Royal Canadian Legion (1015 D Legion Rd).  Here you can drop in and play a few hands of Euchre on Wednesday afternoons (1pm), take in community dinners, and starting September 28, you can enjoy the new Fall Music Series. 5 upcoming Saturday music events are scheduled between Sept. 28 to Dec. 7 (7-10pm).  (More details and specific dates in next week’s Frontenac News).

The Cardinal Café: The Cardinal is well known by locals as well as visitors.  It’s a great place where both hang out and get along well.  You only need to go a day or two a week for your morning brew, and before long it will be your morning brew with great conversation.

Kick & Push Brewery: Remember the theme song of the 80’s hit TV show “Cheers”? A place “Where everybody knows your name!” Well Kick & Push Brewery is our “Cheers.” The atmosphere is cozy and friendly, the conversation is great, and like the Cardinal, it is a place where locals and visitors cohabitate quite nicely.  An added feature of Kick and Push is Open Mic Nights (Friday evenings 5-8pm). Come early!

Belong Sharbot Lake: We are so fortunate to have the addition of “Belong Sharbot Lake” in our village.  It is literally being visited by people from all over the world.  But it is also a place where most evenings you will find local friends and neighbors who you can chat with while you enjoy a fine meal. Chef Brad, his family and staff have created a warm and friendly atmosphere.  If you have nothing to do one night, and you have already eaten dinner; why not pop in for a fabulous dessert?  You might be surprised by who you to run into.

The Sharbot Lake Farmers Market:  The Market this year has been as strong and vibrant as it has ever been.  Although it will be closing for the season in a few weeks, until then it is a great place to connect with familiar people and new vendors and presenters. (Saturdays, 9am-12noon @ The Sharbot Lake Beach Park)

And if you want something more in the “wellness” realm, there is Tai Chi at Soldiers Memorial Hall on Mondays (10-11:30) and a Life Drawing Group at the Medical Centre on Wednesdays (1-4pm). For more info on Tai Chi, Contact John John Pariselli 613-279-2662.  For more info on the Life Drawing group, contact Geoffrey Murray at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or text at 613-812-9428.

Also, this week (Sept 14): Don’t forget the Lion’s Club Community Breakfast (Saturday, Sept 14, 8-11am) at Soldiers Memorial Hall (OSO Hall).  Another great place to connect.
