Battersea/Storrington
by Chris Pantrey

As this is the last column of 2024, thought you should get a bonus joke...

Who wears a red suit and says OH-OH-OH? Santa, walking backwards!

What's a cow's favourite holiday? Moo Year's Day!

The Storrington Pastoral Charge Christmas services are as follows:

Saturday December 21st - The Longest Night service 7pm at Battersea United Church.  Light a candle in memory of a loved one and find comfort together.

Tuesday December 24th - Christmas eve services will be held at 4pm and 7pm at Inverary United Church.

There are no Church services Christmas day.

I hope the Battersea column has helped bring you information and hopefully a little chuckle this past year. Some weeks I struggle to include information that is unique to the Battersea/Sunbury/Storrington area. I would love to hear from you! Birthday wishes, special occasions, the perfect joke, a shout out to your neighbours, please reach out with whatever you would like to see here! Until next year, have a safe and happy holiday. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Denbigh

Merry Christmas to all!

Thank you to the Denbigh Recreation Committee for the Festival of Lights celebration at Heritage Park on Saturday December 14. It was a fantastic evening. The whole event was lit up with lots of lights and decorations. Everyone I talked to and met was amazed at the event and were having a wonderful time. The floats where in a circle which made it easy to see all the wonderful displays. The Memorial Tree had many lights and is dedicated to the memory of family and friends who are no longer with us. It will stay lit up at the park until after Christmas. Santa and Mrs. Claus visited with many children. The fireworks were a wonderful display thanks to Rosie’s Café and General Store. A big thank you to everyone who gave their time to help make this event a time we will all remember.

St Luke’s United Church on Hwy 28 in Denbigh will be celebrating Christmas Eve Service Dec 24 at 5:00 pm. Everyone is welcome.

St Paul’s Lutheran Church on Bridge St in Denbigh will be having Christmas Eve Service Dec 24 at 7:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to join in the celebration.

Have a safe and enjoyable Christmas Season.

Congratulations to our own Pam Lemke – daughter of the late Pearl Killingbeck, on being awarded the Citizen of the Year Award 2024 from the Township of Addington Highlands at their recent Christmas dinner. We love Pam to pieces. We also honour Raymond Arney son of Basil and Ella Arney of Henderson as a recent graduate of the Ontario Police College. Speaking of honour- I’m delighted to announce that it’s twenty-five years since spouse and I eloped on Dec. 21, 1999 and we are still rocking on!

Henderson United hosts a Christmas Eve candle lit service at 7:00 PM and all are welcome. Dress is casual.

Roy Bradshaw of Harlowe/Napanee and his group “Country Sky Band” along with Marie White are hosting an open mike and New Years Fling at the Arden Legion on Tues. Dec. 31 from 1:00- 5:00. We all know Roy and Marie from the Harlowe bashes so are truly excited. Admission is $12.00 per person at the door- with food and beverages available to buy. Wear your dancing boots folks.

By now the peanut butter food bank challenge is wrapped up with thanks to Councillor Nicki Gowdy for making it happen and to all who contributed so fantastically. As of press time, I don’t have the final tallies, but I sure hope us “nuts” in Kennebec won!

Speaking of nuts- do you think it’s a nutty new years dream for an EV charger in beautiful downtown Henderson?

Ompah
by Leane Bailey

The annual Cookie Exchange took place last Saturday. Bakers arrived and placed their cookies on trays then sat down to chat with the other bakers. They shared a hot drink and sampled some of the variety of cookies. At 10:30am, the bell rang to open the exchange. Folks wandered up and down the tables to fill their bins with the mouthwatering wares. All pitched in to clean up then went home happy.

The December Birthday Bash/Christmas Potluck on Dec.18 was a fun event. We all enjoyed a delicious meal together. Thank you to Geoff who prepared the delicious beef stew that we served and to the Ompah Community Choir (John, Linda, Marily, Stan, Richard, John, and Leane) who entertained us with festive music and led us in singing Christmas Carols.

The Community fridge in the foyer often holds veggies or canned goods etc. Everyone is welcome to take whatever is useful to you, or to drop something off.

Please join us on Wednesday mornings for coffee and treats starting at 10am. It’s a great way to meet your Ompah neighbours and friends. While you are there drop by the library which is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to noon. (Note: There are no coffees on the first Wednesday of the Month, when the Community Café is held). The Ompah Community Centre also offers weekly activities such as exercise groups, and Bridge games, drop by the community centre to find out more.

On behalf of the Ompah Community Centre, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year too.

It is that magical season of the year, when the darkest time of the year can seem so bright. As we assemble with loved ones to enjoy the festive season, we can be thankful for so many things. And this is the time to thank the people who make Verona this exciting place to live in. The volunteers in our local organizations, clubs and churches! We would be a very dreary village without our volunteers who make special events a reality. And if you have never volunteered, make 2025 the year to volunteer.

Shop local. With the wintry weather it is convenient to stay in Verona and enjoy shopping at our local merchants. All your holiday needs are covered- from trees, lights, stocking stuffers and presents for under the tree to supplying all the fixings for Christmas dinner. And for the people who are impossible to buy for- gift certificates are available from local merchants and restaurants. Have fun with your imagination this holiday and give the gift of Verona shopping.
