Mini Stock Tournament at SHS

The Sydenham High School Cafeteria was a busy, and noisy, place on Thursday (March 21) as students from school to community classes from across the Limestone District School Board gathered for a mini-stock tournament.

The cafeteria was split into two sections to accommodate two streams of play, a non-competitive stream and a competitive stream. After a brief lesson on how to play stocksport using ministock equipment the SHS has purchased, the teams began the round robin portion of the tournament.

“My students really enjoy the sport, whether as a competitive or non-competitive sport, and I thought it would be great to introduce it elsewhere in the board, and for these students to have the experience of traveling to another school in the board for a tournament.

After playing a few games, the students began to get the hang of the sport and the rules of play. Karl Hammer, who is a school to community teacher at SHS, and also the founder of the Frontenac Stocksport Club, brought the sport to school a few years ago, and it was his idea to hold a tournament for students from other parts of the board.

When the round robin ended and the playoffs were winding down, it became clear that an upset was in the works. The Sydenham High School team did not make the finals

Sydenham was relegated to the match for bronze after losing the semi-finals, and in the end, a mixed team made up of students from Loyalist Collegiate Vocational and Lasalle came through for the gold.

The final shot was a perfectly hit and stick on a ministock located less than a foot from the target, completed by the tournament’s number one  star, Sierra Carrol,  Plans are already afoot for next year’s tournament when SHS will be seeking revenge.
