If you’ve ever visited the Sydenham Liquor Store or the Pet and Farm Supply Store, you may already know Chloe. Her fur is the colour of pale toffee, and her paws are white. Her tail went missing ages ago.
A vintage cat, she’s tolerant of strangers, and submits gracefully to gentle strokes. Some of her greatest threats are the occasional well-meaning people who take her for a vagabond and decide they must ‘rescue’ her. Chloe finds their attentions unwelcome and, well, a bit embarrassing.
Technically, she ‘belongs’ to Kerry and Bill at the pet store, but Chloe’s equally beloved adopted person is John at the Liquor Store, who provides her with her own shallow cloth-lined Moosehead box, so she can sit to supervise operations at cash, and receive occasional cat treats. She has a short backyard route to travel back and forth between the two buildings, and no problem operating the Liquor Store’s motion sensitive electronic doors. Since all produce is well sealed and she doesn’t venture into the rest of the store, there’s no concern about contamination. When it’s closing time, Kerry goes over to bring her home.
During the Liquor Store’s recent lock-down, John dropped in to the Pet Food Store to visit Chloe, and assure her that things would soon return to normal.
She’s one of the small eccentricities that make living in a rural village unique.
