On Friday (August 31) South Frontenac Township announced that the washroom facilities at Gilmour Point Beach, 1763 Wellington Street in Battersea, had been closed until further notice due to vandalism.

“Recreation and Facilities will place a portable washroom at the beach for public use until the facilities can be properly cleaned and plumbing can be replaced,” the township said, in a release.

“We are disappointed to have to close the Gilmour Point washrooms due to vandalism”, said Tim Laprade, Manager of Recreation and Facilities. “Our team will work hard to have the washrooms back open as soon as possible, but unfortunately, they are not in working condition at this time.”

“Damages, expected to cost several thousand dollars, were caused at the Gilmour Point beach facilities this week,” said the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in a media release on Sunday.

“Frontenac detachment members attended the Gilmour Point Beach, located at 1763 Wellington Street in Battersea, just after 6:30 pm on August 29, joining with members of the South Frontenac Fire Department. A trash can had been set on fire at the location, and major damages to the washroom facilities were discovered, including smashed toilets and broken plumbing.”

South Frontenac Township fire officials reported seeing two male youths, aged 10-15 years old, leaving the area heading back into Battersea, when they were arriving at the incident. Police are asking the public for any information or video footage from security or doorbell cameras that would assist in identifying the person(s) who may be involved or responsible for the damage.
