Cataraqui Conservation policy update

Cataraqui Conservation is seeking input from the public on the next phase of its regulatory policies document update: Policies for Implementing Ontario Regulation 41/24.

“Cataraqui Conservation has a regulatory role to ensure that changes to a property do not put people and property at risk from natural hazards, such as flooding and erosion,” explained Gary Oosterhoff, Board Chair of Cataraqui Conservation. The mandate is given by the Province of Ontario to implement Ontario Regulation 41/24: Prohibited Activities, Exemptions and Permits, made under Section 28 of the Conservation Authorities Act.

In 2022, as part of a five-year review, Cataraqui Conservation began a process to update its regulatory policies. Internal review and an initial round of public and stakeholder consultation was held. The process was temporarily paused until a new province-wide regulation came into effect on April 1, 2024.

“Cataraqui Conservation is now continuing with the next phase of consultation,” noted David Ellingwood, General Manager. “The latest revisions will result in a policy with improved clarity and that conforms with Ontario Regulation 41/24.”

The proposed amendments also include new language and terminology, as well as references to the Regulation (which was changed from O. Reg. 148/06 to O. Reg. 41/24 on April 1, 2024).

The consultation period runs from October 1 to October 31, 2024. All feedback will be reviewed by Cataraqui Conservation staff, the Planning and Permitting Ad-Hoc Committee and the Full Authority Board for consideration as part of the policy update process prior to finalization.
