New Leaf Link recently concluded its second annual camp retreat, held over four days and three nights in early September at Camp Kennebec, located in Arden. The experience was nothing short of remarkable, with participants displaying incredible resilience and an upbeat spirit despite some cold and rainy days.

New Leaf Link is a non-profit charitable organization located in Harrowsmith that provides educational day programming for adults living with physical and developmental disabilities, while also offering respite for caregivers. The planning for the journey to camp began well in advance, with preparations enriched throughout the New Leaf Link programming all year round. Participants engaged in activities designed to build teamwork, independence, and social skills, ensuring they were well-prepared for their time at camp.

Camp Kennebec offers campers with special needs, learning disabilities, and developmental delays the opportunity to have a great time and meet or exceed their goals and expectations. Dedicated staff created a supportive and adventurous environment where participants enjoyed activities such as archery, nature hikes, canoeing, swimming, and high ropes, providing experiences that many had not encountered before. Staff and volunteers ensured that all participants, including those with mobility challenges, did not miss any event or experience. Each day began with participants making their beds and keeping their sleeping cabins tidy, fostering a sense of teamwork and personal accountability.

Evenings were filled with campfires, where participants roasted marshmallows and enjoyed sing-alongs with talented guitar players. “The participants had such a great time that the bus hadn't even arrived to take them home when they began asking when they could return!” said Julie Hunt, a parent, staff member, and board member. The one-hour bus trip added to the excitement and anticipation of the adventure.

“Our participants truly shone this year, adapting to the unpredictable weather with positivity,” said Brandy Sheahan, the Developmental Program Manager at New Leaf Link. “It was heartwarming to see the participants eager and determined to complete activities they had never done before.”

The New Leaf Link staff and volunteers worked diligently to provide an enriching experience for all participants. Their commitment and hard work were key to the camp's success, fostering a strong sense of community among everyone involved.

As we reflect on this year's camp, we look forward to Camp 2025, where we will continue to build on these meaningful experiences.
