Verona Lions Paying Out $19,500 To Local Groups

The Verona Lions will be playing early Santa Claus once again this year. Cheques totalling $19,500 are being handed out to locally based sports, social service, and cultural organisations.

The main source of that revenue is the annual Verona Car Show, which this year raised $17,400.

The car show has been running for 29 years, and was part of the Verona Festival and the Cattail Festival when those events were running. John and Julie Nisman of Last Chance Auto have been involved with the show for the last 8 years, and have been working with the Verona Lions as cosponsors since 2020, during which time it has generated about $15,000 for the Lions to give out to local organisations each year.

The total of $17,400 reflects the excellent weather and large crowd at Lions Park in Verona on September 14 this year.

Organisations benefit from the car show, based on need, and on the support they offer to the car show itself.

Doreen Morey, of the Verona Lions, reports that the Frontenac Flyers will receive $4000, as will New Leaf Link. Frontenac Girls Hockey is getting $3000, as is the South Frontenac Museum. The Bellrock Hall receives $2,500, Frontenac Scouts $2,000 and Frontenac Minor Softball $1000.

The 2025 Verona Car Show, which will be the 30th Annual show, takes place on Saturday, September 13.

In an interview with the Frontenac News in early October, John Nisman, who lives in Stone Mills, said that over the years since he has been involved, he has come to appreciate the Verona Lions Club, the Verona community, and South Frontenac Township.

“These people really know how to come together and support each other, and that’s what makes it worth the effort each year,” he said. “I can’t say enough about the groups that come through with volunteers. We could not pull it off without them.”
