Every year, the CUPW local 566 organises a fundraising drive at the Metro Store on Bayridge Drive to raise money for the Kingston Food Bank.
Because Local 566 also represents rural postal workers in Frontenac County, a conversation about having a rural component to the fundraising campaign took place this past summer, and Glenburnie Grocery was approached to host a second fundraiser, in addition to the one in Kingston West.
The store was happy to oblige, and the fundraiser was organised in the early fall, taking place on November 30. Even though the union local is currently in the midst of a labour disruption with Canada Post, the fundraiser went forward, with one minor change.
Usually, Canada Post lets a CUPW member use a Canada Post vehicle for the “stuff the truck" portion of the fundraiser, but that could not happen this year, so at Glenburnie, there were two jeeps being used for the “stuff the Jeeps” element of the event.
Between 10 am and 1pm last Friday (November 30) food and donations were collected, resulting in two full jeeps and $340 in cash, which was all passed on to South Frontenac Community Services Food Bank in Sydenham.
