Juana Gramajo is a Registered Nurse with years of experience working in community care within an urban setting. She relocated to the Sharbot Lake area a few years ago, choosing to live a rural lifestyle and leave the stress of nursing care behind, and she did—for the most part.

Other employment drew her close to senior care and she quickly noticed the differences in community health services in rural areas compared to living in a city. Deciding to put her skills to good use, she planned to return to healthcare, but on her own terms. This past winter, she started setting up a mobile footcare nursing service to enhance access in rural communities, mainly in North and Central Frontenac.

She began by completing a Foot Canada Training Course for advanced foot care nursing, followed by business-based courses offered by local agency Connections Adult Learning. All the while, putting together a business plan and developing treatment and business protocols. It all led to the establishment of “Knock Your Socks Off” foot care in April of this year.

“I am a registered nurse who provides foot care services. I provide a health service with a focus on the lower leg and foot. Initial appointments are scheduled for 90 minutes to gather a baseline of client’s health status, not just for their feet. Knowing what health conditions clients are living with helps me better understand and monitor their foot health.” The initial visit is comprehensive including consent forms, health status review, and vital signs including blood pressure. Follow-up visits are half as long.

“I assess and monitor foot sensation and circulation, as well as skin and nail health.” she said. “I provide services tailored to the needs of each client. If a client has a specific concern such as a corn or fungus, I create a care plan for ongoing management of their issue. This can include health education for things clients can do to manage their foot health at home.”

Where necessary, she will work in collaboration with family physicians. With follow-up footcare visits recommended every 6-8 weeks, changes from a client’s baseline status can be detected and managed sooner. She keeps detailed documentation, including photos, to better monitor any changes to foot health.

Each visit includes the foot treatment: nail trim and filing; fungal, corn, or callus reduction; offloading to areas prone to pressure; ingrown nail treatments; or applying comfort tape for conditions such as plantar fasciitis.

“Many clients report immediate relief after the first visit. I am guided by the clients needs and strive to provide a quality service that knocks their socks off! It takes time and a lot of hard work, but I am providing a needed service for my community, and that’s worth it.”

Juana holds Knock Your Socks Off clinics by appointment at the Clar Mill Hall in Plevna, the Ompah Hall, the Snow Road Hall, at Finnegan’s Store in Cloyne, and at the Westport Chiropractic Centre. She is looking to expand her reach and is seeking suitable locations in Central Frontenac for clinics. She also does home visits throughout the region for clients who can’t make it out to clinic days.
