Hydro One crews, firefighters and satellite/internet providers were busy from Saturday, March 29 to Monday, March 31, as they worked to restore power, internet and reduce damage caused by the multi-day ice-storm that pummeled Frontenac County and other regions of Southern Ontario.

The ice storm that caused damage to trees and power lines, due to ice accumulation, caused over 500,000 Hydro One customers to lose power.

While it is difficult to report exact numbers, due to how quickly a power outage report can change, according to PowerOutage.com (a website that collects power outage data across the country), well over 1,500 properties in the Verona area were still without power until Monday evening or Tuesday morning. (It should be noted, however, that many of those properties are seasonal cottage properties that are vacant at this time of year.)

Many property owners in the Verona area, and elsewhere in the region, aSAving Tctually went through dual outages.

The power went out on Saturday or early Sunday, and was restored by Sunday afternoon, only to go out again a few hours later for up to 24 hours.

Road crews spent the weekend gauging the weather and road conditions in real time, to determine the best course of action.

On gravel roads, in some locations, leaving a layer of snow under the ice build-up was a better option than plowing to the road base, because that would only result in glare ice over a hard base.

Thanks to the warming weather, and savvy road maintenance crews, the region was easily navigable by Monday morning.

There will be no rest for weary road crews this week however, as another wintry mix is on its way.
