The Central Frontenac Railway Heritage Society has welcomed a new resident to Railway Heritage Park in Sharbot Lake. Over the past year, many people driving past the park have been puzzled by the white fenced enclosure built in 2022, but with the arrival of a Hereford steer the purpose of the large pen is now obvious. It is in fact a reproduction of the stock pen that stood in the same location for much of the first half of the twentieth century, where local farmers would bring livestock to be loaded onto railway cars for shipment to the stockyards in Toronto.
This Hereford was actually created for the park by a fiberglass statue company in Long Island, New York, and shipped north in August. He is already proving to be a hit with kids and adults alike, almost as popular for photos as the caboose. The only thing missing is a name for the steer, so the Railway Society is sponsoring a "Name the Hereford Steer" contest.
Entries should be submitted by Tuesday, October 15 via e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots.
