Little Theatre Brings Dracula to Sharbot Lake

Published in 1897 Bram Stoker’s Dracula is the most popular literary work about the vampire legends. In 2023 after being inspired by a very generous donation of some Halloween animatronics, Jeff Siamon went to work on an adaption for the stage. This year it is ready to be presented and performed by the North Frontenac Little Theatre. It has been at least a dozen years since NFLT has taken on such dark subject matter. We thought It was appropriate since it is right after Halloween.

The story is told through a series of letters and journal entries by the main character Johnathan Harker. Harker travels to Transylvania on business and quickly finds himself in grave danger. Meanwhile back in England, Jonathan’s fiancé Mina and her friends and family are experiencing the same type of strange eerie events Johnathan is trying to escape. Enter Dr. Seward and Dr Van Helsing who are trying to unravel this perilous mystery.

Dracula is one of the most popular characters in fiction. There have been hundreds of movie adaptations starting in 1921 with a Hungarian version. Every decade since has produces several remakes from the satiric to the horror. Come and get a thrill out of ours.

One of the reasons for its popularity is the many themes woven into the plot. Dracula and his castle represent the old world where Seward and Van Helsing are the new. The female vampires represent temptation and seduction – quite an avant garde thing considering the sexual repression and morals of the 1890s. Another interesting theme is the immigration of the Dracula clan from eastern Europe to England – something very much in the news today. Finally, in spite of Stoker’s Dracula spinning off an entire industry of vampire, zombie and undead themed stories – in this one the good old good triumphing over evil rides again.

Performances are Wed Nov 6th Thurs Nov 7th at 7:30. Friday we are having a dinner theatre starting at 6 with performance to follow at 7:30. Saturday is a matinee starting at 2 although due to its mature themes, we don’t recommend it for young children. Doors open half hour before
