Gary Colwell – President North Frontenac Amateur Astronomy Club | Jul 24, 2024

On Saturday August 10, 2024 at 8:00pm at the North Frontenac Astronomy Park, the North Frontenac Amateur Astronomy Club will be honoring the memory of one of our members by naming our latest Observatory the “Guy Frederick Nason Memorial Observatory” in light of his his many years of faithful dedication to astronomy, and public outreach to the residents of North Frontenac and beyond.

Guy had a number of passions through his life including photography, environmental issues, car rallying, travel and ice racing. His greatest interest though was astronomy sparked by the arrival of Halley's Comet in 1986. He was heavily involved in the Toronto Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada where he first served as a councillor in 1987 as well as a 3-year term as President from 2000-2003. He travelled with RASC groups and on his own to witness 8 total solar eclipses, transits of Venus across the sun, and to follow his astronomical adventures over 5 continents.

In 2013 he was heavily involved in the official recognition of the North Frontenac Dark Sky Preserve (now known as the North Frontenac Astronomy Park) where he could be found on clear nights with his telescope and binoculars sharing his astronomical knowledge and interest.

Guy had a passion for sharing the skies with the public and it was contagious. Over the past several years Guy was instrumental in developing public programs and in helping to build both observatories at the Astronomy Park. If there was an event at the Astronomy Park…..he was there. Guy also participated in our annual “Festival of Stars” event giving guided tours of the night sky which were eagerly attended.

Come join us at the dedication of our latest observatory in honour of Guy.
