Maguire does not want to rule out development charges

After attending a session on development charges - fees that are tacked on to applications for development above and beyond the normal building and planning fees - Township Clerk Brenda Defosse said that townships with population under 5,000 are not advised to set up these fees, and it was proposed that North Frontenac decide on principle not to impose them

The fees are seen as a deterrent to development, and they are generally devoted to “hard” services such as sewer and water, services not offered by North Frontenac.

South Frontenac has development fees in place.

Mayor Maguire said he “does not want to rule out development fees out of hand,” and asked for the matter to be deferred and the township planning consultant be asked to comment on their viability in North Frontenac.

TENDERS – the gravel crushing contract went to Robert Young, who was the lowest bidder at $102,000

The winter sand tender went to Gemmill’s Construction at $47,400, which was the lowest of two bids.

Finally, the paving contract went to Greenwood Paving at $592,880, which again was the lowest of two bids.

FISHING DERBY – A request for support for a fishing derby on Big Gull Lake led Councilor Wayne Good to say he opposed the township endorsing any fishing derby that is not committed to a full catch and release program.

“Don’t get me wrong. It’s a great cause,” said Good of the Big Gull Lake Derby, “but it should be live release.”

Recreation Coordinator Corey Klatt will approach the Big Gull Association to determine if they are fully committed to catch and release.
