Arden
by Brent Fehr

Agriculture of various kinds has played a role in Arden's history; in 1900, 220 farms were listed in the township census. In spite of the limited availability of real farm land, most people grew some of their own food, and at one point there was a cheese factory on Elm Tree Road, just west of the village.  Now the closest cheese factory is Artisan Back 40 (artisancheese.ca).  We enjoyed their fabulous 6 Cheese wood fired pizza last week.  They are open Friday’s & Saturday’s from 11:30am - 7pm until the end of September. Go visit soon at; 1406 Gulley Road, Mississippi Station, North on Hwy 509.

September 28th - Harvest Breakfast at the Arden United Church, 1076 Railway St.  Come and enjoy country sausages, eggs made to order, harvest vegetable hash, toast, juice, tea and coffee.  Lively conversations and community social. Free will donation gratefully accepted

September 28th - Chinese Dinner & Quarter Auction at Arden Legion, sponsored by Ladies Auxiliary. Saturday at 5pm for Dinner, Auction to follow. Tickets are $20 per person. Contact Arden Legion for tickets @ 613-335-2737 or email Lois at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

September 19, 2024 The Perth & District Historical Society has made its home for several years at the Perth-Upon-Tay Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. And so, to start the 2024 – 2025 season, for our September 19, 2024 meeting, we are taking a look at our local Legion’s Veterans Banner Programme. Speaker: Stacey Niceliu will speak on the topic called The Veterans Banners of Perth. His presentation will cover the background for introducing the project in Perth, the sponsors and the extent of the community’s participation. As for previous years, the raising of the Veterans banners in Perth signals the start of Legion Week. Stacey Niceliu, a member of the Perth-Upon-Tay Branch, is our speaker for this month and is one of the members working with the Veterans Banner Programme. The banners displayed throughout Perth help demonstrate the history of military service over the years by those connected with Perth. Plevna
by Rhonda Watkins

My apologies to the Clar-Mill Community Volunteers Bingo Lunch crew for posting the wrong date last week. I had said it was on Tues, Sept 19th, when it was actually Tues, Sept 17th. Apparently it had gotten some people wondering if the day had changed, but it had not. I just made a flub! Bingo lunches are always every second Tuesday from 11-1pm at the Plevna Clar-Mill Hall (6598 Buckshot Lake Road)  and the next one will be Tues, Oct 1 (I double checked the date this time, whew!).

All you need is $10 to enjoy a delicious lunch with a FREE Bingo card for the chance to win some Grocery Prizes. Extra Bingo cards are available for $2 each. Poker chips are provided to mark cards. It's a really fun way to win groceries, enjoy a delicious lunch, play bingo and socialize with your neighbours!

If you are wondering where the Bingo Lunch money earned is going for the next few months: September's proceeds are going to the Haunted Rink, October's is going to the Children's Christmas Party and November's will be going to the Riverhill Farm lights and fireworks.  All wonderful community events to support! Thank you, Clar-Mill Community Volunteers!!  For more Bingo Lunch information, you can call 905-213-3820.

On Tuesday nights, The Plevna Clar-Mill Hall is the place to be if you enjoy playing Euchre! On Sept 10th there were 23 people out to enjoy the night. Congrats to Bonnie B. for winning a high score of 97 and tying with Lonnie W. with 6 lone hands. WOW! There is no admission, but donations are kindly accepted for the Plevna Holy Trinity Anglican Church. If you want to come out, we gather around 6:50pm and games start at 7. Refreshments are enjoyed after the games when we give out the prizes! For more info you can call 613 264-5325.

She uses DNA results to corroborate the paper trail of family research. Cindy has a special interest in genetic genealogy. She has taken more than 30 courses with the International Institute of Genealogy Studies.

Following, there  will be questions and answers in unraveling history one tombstone at a time. After 3 years of hard work gathering information on the cemeteries around here by this group, you can bet it is going to be a can't miss afternoon.  You can also look forward to interesting displays, books and other memorabilia.  When you are there don't forget to find out how to win the FREE DNA KIT door prize! Each week in September I have been introducing you to a few of the studios on The Back Roads Studio Tour coming up the Sept 28/29th weekend. It runs from 10-4pm each day and is the perfect way to spend an Autumn weekend in North Frontenac!

Studio 7 is the Red Dragon Gallery and Gift Shop at 1091 Ridge Lane in Ardoch. The lovely and talented Cathy Owen has been painting watercolors for 32 years and teaching for over 26 years. She began traditional stained glass work about 22 years ago, but now has evolved to include beautiful mosaic stained glass, sculptures, jewelry, painted fabric and garden art.

Studio 7 is also where you will find Yellow House Studio. Wendy is passionate about cyanotype - it's  the interesting art of sun photography - a cameraless technique that harnesses the light of the sun to create stunning blue and white images. Wendy's work is largely nature-inspired, which is reflected in most of the Breathe-taking pieces she creates!

Studio 8 is where you will find Farm House Stitching & Vintage Journals at 6172 Road 506 in Ardoch. Linda's studio is filled with her Beautiful Vintage Journals which are hand crafted from brand new materials & distressed, with various mediums, to take on a vintage look. Her quilted items are all lovingly put together. She has tote bags, cell phone pouches, wallets, cell/dog walking pouches, quilts and so much more!

Studio 9 is the home of Stone ridge Art Studio at 6672 Hwy 506 in Plevna. At this studio you will note Katie's passion for painting, photography, graphic design and sculpture overlap, taking her into new artistic directions, never settling on one style of art. You will even find deliciously sweet honey!! Creativity flourishes at this studio with Katie!

Studio 10 is located at the Plevna Clar-Mill Hall (6598 Buckshot Lake Road) You will find multiple talents at this location. Including; Original Photography by Michelle Ross. Michelle knew nature photography was her passion ever since she took her first picture of a Beautiful Sunflower many years ago! She loves to capture the beauty of nature with her camara. You will find her fabulous works of art complimented on unique handmade greeting cards and also in various sizes of prints and collage posters.

Studio 10 is also where you will find MarZeeDotes Designs. This artist has been creating jewelry on and off since they made their first macrame choker back in the mid-70's. Turning a piece of copper, silver, polymer, metal clay or beads into something beautiful gives great satisfaction to this talented artist!

You will certainly see the love for the outdoors that this artist from Grindstone Pottery shows in the unique and functional pottery they create at their studio on Grindstone Lake.

Last, but hardly least for this week is Studio 10's Art By The Baileys! You will meet my lovely fellow Ompah columnist and her husband and be able to check out  their creative talents and the beautiful artwork they create with their coloured pencils, pastels and acrylic paints for us to enjoy! Their favourite subjects are pets, wildlife, family portraits, landscape scenes, homes and cottages.

Stay tuned for more studio details next week!!

Last week, upon invitation, I attended the meeting of the Sharbot Lake Lions Club. I received a warm greeting, a great roast beef meal, and became familiar with the significant work that the club does for our community.  Their community breakfasts not only raise money for “guide dogs for those in need but with limited means, but their methods of raising funds also create a great sense of community among our residents.” Well done!
