Treasures in the Attic

Over a hundred items, artifacts and family heirlooms were brought to South Frontenac Museum Society’s first-ever “Treasures in the Attic” at Verona Lions’ Hall last Saturday. Four local antique dealers: two active, two retired, were on hand to provide information. Some came to watch; most brought treasures to show and learn about. A large hand-stitched ‘sampler,’ probably stitched by a child, had been handed down in the same family since the mid-1800’s. Another person brought in an exquisite Art Nouveau lamp of brass and marble.

Gerrit Buitenhuis produced a fiendishly tough historical quiz about the township: Frank York got the highest score, only 5 out of 8 correct answers! (This quiz, and its answers, will soon be on the Museum’s website.) Also on hand was David Pugh of the Bedford Historical Society, with maps of the four original townships that amalgamated to form South Frontenac Township 25 years ago.

Stories abounded: stories about the items, where they may have come from, what they were used for.
