My curiosity was peaked as a I sat idle at the crossroads of Rd 38 & Harrowsmith (Rutledge Road). A new sign had emerged that was understated but said The Mudhouse Spa. I adjusted my glasses to get a better glimpse of the inside before I had to turn as an impatient driver nudged me along. A few days pass and again, I am drawn towards the word ‘spa’. It had been a long time since I treated myself to some self-care and normally, I try to adopt a plan for the end of a summer season, or start of Fall, and we have already launched into the cold months, so I am due. A good facial or body scrub would feel sooooo good right now to decompress and celebrate the change of season.
I briefly spoke with the Mudhouse Spa President ‘Mudlady Connie’ who I found through a side door and she was covered in paint and focused on the task at hand. She has been working hard on renovating the adjacent rooms and explained with enthusiasm that this will be the Mud Room offering hair salon services, clothing, and organic mud from a bog in Alfred, Ontario, and that she hopes it will be completed within the next little while. The mud itself is cleaned 3 separate times, and then sent in a pail to the Mud Lady who uses it for her mud baths, mud wraps, scrubs, and mud facials. And yes, even cellulite treatments with mud will be on offer now that she is officially certified!
As I enter the building, there is a calming effect. Music plays low in the background and the aromas soothe me. I can already feel the stress fall away as I am greeted upon entry. Connie introduces me to Chelsea who is warm and friendly as they explain to me the services offered and give me a quick tour. There are displays of some of the fabulous products used during your treatment, that line the well stocked shelves. The main desk is straight ahead and it is the centre point for the various treatment rooms that surround the main hall. To my right are two well placed stations where you can enjoy a pedicure with Paraffin while watching the bustle of the village pass by, and you can have a friend join you for a Hot Stone manicure as you chat about the latest news and catch up in pampered bliss.
Nail treatments, Gel polish, and French polish are all on offer and can be added to your spa experience while you enjoy one of their beautiful treatment rooms for a wax or tint. On my list for the next visit, will be a body treatment and I just need to decide between an exfoliation which sounds so refreshing to shed the past year as I look forward to the next; or if I will try the full body mud wrap? Decisions, decisions.
For those who are looking for a fun gift idea, they also offer a couples suite, where you can have a romantic session in privacy. Massages include Swedish, Lymphatic Drainage, Deep Tissue, Hot Stones, Warm Bamboo, Reiki, and Reflexology. Macaila, the Mudhouse Spa Manager, would love to help you plan your day to “relax, revitalize, and rejuvenate”. She notes that “we pride ourselves on making our clients healthy from the inside out with our detoxifying treatments of natural, organic products made locally in Ontario. Our mission is to make everyone healthy…mentally, physically, and spiritually.”
